Blazing Saddles is 25 this year! Party Time!

Blazing Birthday Bash

Blazing Saddles celebrated 25 years this year, so we’re planning some special events and you’re invited – some will definitely involve beer and cake, and of course, biking, beer and cake. Watch this space for more details as we organize dates. Here’s a bit of history to tell you how we got here:

How it all began

John was originally a bricklayer, and then a Civil Engineer, working in the sewage works, but in 1994 he gave it all up to open a bike shop in Barrowford, a small one-man operation, and the first Blazing Saddles. Before opening the shop he undertook a business course, because before opening a shop, some market research was required. He devised a questionnaire and then pursued cyclists with a clipboard, either waving them down by the roadside or approaching them whilst stationary. This was to help establish if there was a need for a cycle shop in his local town. He found plenty of keen people, and here is a photo of John in front of the original shop.

Blazing Saddles moved to Hebden Bridge in 2001 to be in the heart of mountain biking country. It’s a great base for all types of riding.

Despite it all!

There have been many adventures on the way, new staff, new customers; many of whom are now friends. In 2015 the terrible floods in the valley nearly wiped us out, but a strong team, a great community and wonderful customers and friends all helped us to carry on.

Happy Birthday to Us!
